Montara News

A group of Montara’s 5th grade STEM Magnet students have dedicated their Wednesday afternoons to learning how to code programs on the computer!  They are following the Google CS-First curriculum, learning to code on Scratch, a program developed by MIT. Ms. Ngai, Ms. Repreza, and Ms. Zeleke have signed on to be their coding “gurus” to guide them through this process.   In their latest project, the students learned how to create a program with characters exchanging dialogue while rain poured down on them and lightning flashed in the background.

The students are learning valuable coding vocabulary and tools, including sequencing, randomness, and looping.  It is so exciting to watch the students code, test, and recode to make their programs work just the way they want them to.  It is also fabulous to see the students’ creativity shine through in their projects.  We are very excited to provide the students the opportunity to learn these valuable computer science tools and look forward to finding out where these skills might take them in their futures!

The Parent Center will be holding a Halloween Quilt Drawing next week, October 24th to 28th, and will be selling tickets at the dismissal gates.  Tickets are $1 or 6 tickets for $5.  All proceeds will go to the purchase of materials for parent center classes.  Please contact Erika Padilla in the Parent Center for more information.
